face to face with our animals!

Gettorf Animal Park

7. February 2016:

Farewell to our tapir “Rüdiger”

After nearly 20 years, the keepers of the park had to say goodbye to one of their favorites: our male tapir “Rüdiger” died at the age of 20. Rüdiger came to us in 1997 at the age of one from the zoo Osnabrück and had been with us for many years as a breeding male. During all these years he always was a very loving and affable father – not a matter of course in these rather solitary animals.

Unfortunately, he was doing badly during the last few months and even getting worse. He had severe breathing problems now and again and finally could hardly eat. So the keepers cooked him his own mash and was fed him bit by bit until he had to take rest to collect his strength. But during the last few weeks he became progressively weaker and eventually lost his spirits…

For us this means saying goodbye to a very friendly tapir and a really great dad. He was a real character and will be sorely missed by us all!
